A Journey of Faith and Rebirth - The Final Days of Brother Longjing

By Householder Jingmiao

Brother Longjing, a man of few words and deep spiritual conviction, had been a cornerstone of the Taipei Amitabha-Recitation Group since its inception. He was known for his polite demeanor and quiet contributions, and his presence was a constant during the group's duty shifts. His smile, a reflection of his profound spiritual dedication, often disguised the gravity of his personal struggle — two years ago he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

Despite the severity of his condition, Longjing chose a path of acceptance rather than aggressive treatment, which he believed would be burdensome for both his body and his family. As his health declined, with the cancer pressing on his bile duct and causing elevated liver enzymes and jaundice, Longjing made a poignant decision. He signed a voluntary discharge form, opting out of further medical interventions, recognizing that his time was limited and that pursuing treatment was futile.

On March 29, 2024, Longjing shared a personal update via the Line App, revealing the physical toll of his illness: weight loss, diminished strength, and difficulty in mobility. His message was one of resignation to his physical condition and of hope  -  not for recovery -  but for rebirth in the Pure Land, as promised by his faith in Amitabha Buddha. This resolve was underscored last November when Longjing shared an article titled “My Journey with Amitabha Buddha,” authored by Foci from China. It was an unusual act for the reserved Longjing and highlighted his deep faith and trust in the path he had chosen.

Earlier, on March 6, 2024, Longjing had sent me a video of Master Foxi conducting an assisted-recitation session for an elderly, devout member of the community. The elder had achieved his desired rebirth on March 2, 2024. Longjing expressed his admiration and joy for the elder's peaceful passing and his gratitude towards Master Foxi for facilitating what he saw as a compassionate and dignified transition. This video was not just a message. It was a clear indication of Longjing’s own longing for a similar journey toward rebirth.

The message about the recent assisted-recitation session for Brother Longjing, therefore, came as a poignant reminder of his steadfast faith and the community’s support for one of its own in his final days. Despite being shocked by the news, everyone could find solace in knowing that Longjing was following a path he deeply believed in, surrounded by those who respect his wishes and contributed to his spiritual journey toward the Pure Land.

Despite his battle with terminal pancreatic cancer, he radiated a sense of peace that I once remarked upon, telling him, "Though you seem a bit tired, you look radiant. I am sure you are on the right path. You truly are a dedicated Amitabha-reciter." To which he confidently replied, "Thank you for your encouragement, Sister Jingmiao. I am certain of the path I have chosen. As Master Huijing teaches, 'Rebirth is not difficult.'"

In his final weeks, Longjing continued his volunteer work with unwavering commitment. He maintained his daily ritual of reporting his recitation counts to the group until the very end, a testament to his devotion. His dedication extended to ensuring that all arrangements for his passing were in place; he personally requested the contact details for Brother Guangjing, who coordinates end-of-life care within our community. In a touching family gathering, he signed the consent form which authorized the Chinese Pure Land Buddhist Association to perform the assisted recitation and the final rites for his passing.

The last time I reached out to him to inquire about his health, he responded with profound gratitude, attributing his well-being to "Amitabha Buddha's protection." Shortly afterwards, he conveyed to his fellow practitioners a serene acknowledgment that Amitabha Buddha was coming to take him home.

During the solemn yet peaceful assisted-recitation session, and despite the severe pain typically associated with his illness, Longjing experienced no discomfort. He appeared tranquil, as if asleep. In a remarkable moment at the ceremony of casketing, attendees witnessed an extraordinary sight: lotus flowers seemed to materialize around the coffin, and Longjing appeared rejuvenated, standing on a golden lotus, radiating light and expressing gratitude to everyone present.

Longjing's journey from learning about the Buddhist Dharma to his steadfast practice in the Pure Land teachings exemplified the core principles of our faith: having unwavering faith in and accepting Amitabha’s deliverance, practicing single-minded recitation of Amitabha’s name, and aspiring to rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land. His life and passing not only strengthened our communal bonds but also inspired a deeper engagement with our practice of Amitabha-recitation, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. At this moment, we are  sure that Longjing is devoted to the comprehensive deliverance of all sentient beings.
