 PROCEDURE OF TAKING TRIPLE REFUGE

 

  1. Three Prostration before the Buddha
  1. Recite ‘Namo Amituofo’ ten, hundreds or thousands times
  1. Take an oath [Kneel down with joined palms]

       Ven. Master: Today, you are going to take refuge in the Buddha, Buddha as your guide, and from now on, will never take refuge in any non-Buddhists, are you capable of take such refuge?

       Answer: Yes.

       Ven. Master: Today, you are going to take refuge in the Dharma, Dharma as your guide, and from now on, will never accept any non-Buddhist teachings, are you capable of take such refuge?

       Answer: Yes.

       Ven. Master: Today, you are going to take refuge in the Sangha, Sangha as your guide, and from now on, will never follow any non-Buddhist disciple, are you capable of take such refuge?

       Answer: Yes.

  1. Repentance [recite 3 times and prostrate after each]

Every unwholesome act I have ever committed;

All are due to beginningless craving, aversion, and delusion;

Generated through body, speech, and mind;

I now make repentance for them all before the Buddha.

  1. Making Vows [recite 3 times and prostrate after each]

Countless are sentient beings, I vow to liberate them;

Endless are defilements, I vow to eradicate them;

Innumerable are the Dharma-doors, I vow to master them;

Unsurpassable is the Buddha’s Way, I vow to attain it.

  1. Taking the Three Refuges (Repeat after Venerable Master)

       I, disciple (own name)

for the rest of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the incomparably honored one who have attained perfect virtues and wisdom; from now on I will never take refuge in any non-Buddhists.

for the rest of my life, take refuge in Dharma, honored for being away from defilements; from now on I will never accept any non-Buddhist teachings.

for the rest of my life, take refuge in Sangha, most honored among sentient beings; from now on I will never follow any non-Buddhist disciples.

Take refuge in Buddha and shall never fall into the path of hell in all future lives. I have taken refuge in the Buddha.

Take refuge in the Dharma and shall never fall into the path of the animals in all future lives. I have taken refuge in the Dharma.

Take refuge in the Sangha and shall never fall into the path of hungry ghosts in all future lives. I have taken refuge in the Sangha.

M ay the resulting merit be distributed to all sentient beings without discrimination.

May we all aspire to perfect enlightenment for the sake of other beings, and be reborn in the Land of Peace and Joy.
